Aripan or Alpana, in mithilanchal, is done, invariably, with a flowing liquid of rice paste. Rice is allowed to soak for 3-4 hours and then it is ground to a fine paste on grinding stone (mixer). It is made into liquid of flowing consistency by adding water. Four fingers of right hand are dipped in this liquid and using the middle and ring fingers lines are drawn 3-4 inches at a time. Main lines are always double due to use of two fingers. decorative lines and dots are made with one finger. Vermilion is applied to the drawings in course of drawing.

Devothan Aripan

Aripan means to honour/invite god through pictures made on the floor in order to seek their blessing. These geometric shapes made on the floor have great importance. Devothan Aripan is made on the day of Devothan Ekadasi of Kartik month. On this day onwards all the pujas, weddings and shubh karyas start. According to Hindu Calender, Lord Vishnu goes into a deep sleep for 3-4 months and wakes up on the day of Devothan Ekadasi of Kartik month.
